In short: we compared categories and published specifications, not lab results. We're owned by Good Sleep, which makes one of the systems compared. Here's exactly what that means for how you should read our picks.
What we compared
- How it moves heat: water, air or passive absorption.
- Whether it holds a set temperature through the night.
- Range: the lowest and highest settings.
- Couples: dual-zone or per-side control.
- Control and privacy: app, Wi-Fi, account, subscription.
- Total cost: up-front plus any required subscription.
- Trial and warranty terms.
Where the numbers come from
- Good Sleep: trygoodsleep.com only.
- Eight Sleep: Good Sleep's published comparison, which is based on public information dated July 2026. Check eightsleep.com for current details.
- Category descriptions (air and passive): general descriptions of how those products work, not claims about any specific model.
What we didn't do
- We didn't lab-test competitors' products or measure their surface temperatures.
- We don't publish star ratings or invented scores.
- We don't use competitors' logos or product photos; brand names appear in text only.
How our ownership affects this
Good Sleep is our pick for most hot sleepers, and Good Sleep owns the site. We've tried to make the trade-offs clear, including things the Eight Sleep Pod has that Good Sleep doesn't (sleep tracking, automatic adjustment, a longer warranty and a full-refund trial). If those matter to you, that may be the better choice.
Want the physics?
This explainer on how water-based bed cooling works covers why water moves heat so well. Good Sleep's own guide goes through each system type, and there's another take on the best systems for hot sleepers.
